Reading is wonderful year-round, but there are two really great seasons of the year to read: summer and winter! Whether by the pool or cozied up inside by the fire, reading is a great way to grow and learn. Mandy Tennity, foster parent engagement specialist at Lutheran Family Services of Virginia, shares some of her favorites books about foster care and adoption.

Three Little Words: A Memoir by Ashley Rhodes-Courter
A moving memoir of a young girl’s traumatic experience in foster care.  An insightful book for both foster and adoptive parents and those thinking about fostering.

A Forever Family: Fostering Change One Child at a Time by Rob Scheer
A story about a foster youth who becomes an adoptive parent. A story of how impactful one person can be.

Walk to Beautiful: The Power of Love and a Homeless Kid Who Found the Way by Jimmy Wayne
A tale of redemption and overcoming the odds. Jimmy Wayne tells the story of his childhood and becoming a country music star.

And, for a touch of fiction…

Before We Were Yours: A Novel by Lisa Winegate
Based on the Tennessee Children’s Home Society scandal, this fictional book tells the story of what family really means. This book holds justice, family and forgiveness hand in hand.

“There are so many amazing and powerful books about foster care and adoption, I hope you are able to find one that you connect with. ” — Mandy Tennity
