What types of volunteer opportunities are available at LFSVA? There are a wide variety of opportunities in programs around the state of Virginia. They include activities in our schools and other programs, group work projects, helping provide needed goods and services, fund raising and advocacy work. Go to our volunteer opportunities, advocacy, and wish list pages to see what makes the most sense for you and to find out where our greatest needs are. Also, if you have a skill or interest not listed, we would still love to talk to you.

How do I volunteer with Lutheran Family Services of Virginia? Go to the Volunteer Opportunities page and search for opportunities in your area. When you have a found a good fit with your skills, simply fill in the volunteer interest form on the bottom of the page. We will be in touch within 48 hours!

What are the time requirements? There are no minimum time requirements for volunteering with Lutheran Family Services of Virginia.

What is the minimum age to volunteer? We welcome all ages, but ask that young people under the age of 16 be part of a group led by an adult.

What if I don’t find a volunteer opportunity listed in my community? LFSVA does not have services in every community and not all of our programs are currently recruiting volunteers. As our volunteer program expands and our needs change, there may be an opportunity for you!

What will I have to do in order to volunteer? Generally, once you have identified an area of interest, you’ll be asked to complete an application form and be interviewed. If the assignment involves working with vulnerable clients, you may be asked to consent to a background check. After the application process, interview and appropriate placement, you will receive appropriate training, if necessary, for the position(s) for which you will be volunteering.

Why do I need to apply for volunteer positions at LFSVA?  Because we want to make certain this is the best possible experience for you. The application process helps us match you to opportunities available and ensures that we can communicate with you about your volunteer role at LFSVA. It’s also an opportunity for you to interview us and determine if we’re the right fit for you.

What if I want to donate school supplies or other items?  To better serve you, please call Leah Hatcher at 540.562.8486 to arrange delivery. We are not able to accept all types of donations so please check out our Wish List for a better understanding of the needs of our services.  Our staff will help you fill out a donation form.

What tax deductions can I take for volunteering? Please consult with your tax advisor about tax deductions for volunteering. Mileage and other costs may be deductible. Some businesses will match a donation or donate money in honor of a volunteer’s hours. You also may be able to get time off during the workday to volunteer.

I have a group that wants to volunteer, what is available? Opportunities for groups can vary throughout the year and will depend on our needs and resources available as well as what services are in your community.
